About Me

I'm a very tall overly obsessive final year medical student. I happen to really like traveling, watching TV shows on my laptop, playing Tetris, art + music, and baking. Religiously. In this blog I'll be talking about my daily events and whatever randomly comes up..

BYE 2016

You haven't been the best of years, but you don't compare to 2015 in regards to personal horrible-ness. I drove like crazy to get home and make it before midnight just so I'd be able to post something before 2016 ended, seeing as I haven't all year long. Crap post, but no one reads this blog anyway.

Happy new year everyone!

Day 2 of 30 Day Writing Challenge

Write something that someone told you about yourself that you never forgot.

Hmm, this one is a bit difficult I'd say, partially because I have the memory span of a demented goldfish, but also because.. I don't know. I don't mean to be self-deprecating, but I don't generally believe any compliments given to me. Two things on opposite sides of the spectrum though are:
-"Hmm what an interesting apathetic shell I need to break through!' [this was recent, about two months ago..]

But also:
-"You're one the most caring and genuine people I've ever met; your heart is made of gold."

Shedding some light onto both though, I do agree that I've developed an apathy incomparable to anything else, but the one thing I absolutely cannot get apathetic over is my friends; all of them. And hence, the latter was told to me by someone I absolutely adore.. Who lives in Pittsburgh.. And has blonde hair. You should know who you are if you're reading through my blog (which you probably aren't, so I'm forwarding you a link to this post XD)

In other news, today is my day off work (already! HA) and I'm going to dinner with none other than the amahzing Dr. Sinead Cronin, and a few peeps from the summer gang.. (Mitwalli, you're missed.)
Time for a power nap because I'm lazy like that.

Till next time!

Today marks the first day of me starting work as a junior physician. I think I've mentioned before that I start in the emergency department, and I'm on evening shift. Let's hope this goes well!

Today also marks the first day of the 30 day writing challenge! So I'll get right to it:

Day 1: list 10 things that make you really happy.
1) Genuine people.
2) Good coffee.
3) My favorite friends (you know who you are..)
4) Good music alongside a good book.
5) Appreciation.
6) Animals (various species.)
7) Orchids.
8) Traveling, and wandering around.
9) Finding a monetary bill in a pocket or an old wallet.
10) Ice cream.

Alright so the extra info promised:

-Job wise: slowly it unravels, the moment we've been waiting for, and with work starting on Sunday, I went to ask about where I'll be put. Honestly speaking, I wasn't happy with the group I was put in; then again, who gives a crap at this point, I've been through far too much this year to care about something so petty. That aside, I'll be starting with surgery, and my first subgroup is emergency! Should be fun, dealing with bellyaches and ..more bellyaches in the ER, and also experiencing shift work, so I guess it's not all bad that I'm starting with this.

-Nose wise: do you need a septoplasty? Do you feel like you can't breathe half the time? Get one. Much recommended. It's not that bad at all. Healing is iffy, stitches are annoying, but hey, I'll be able to breathe through my nose and run for over a minute without dying!

Also, I mentioned last time that I'd be starting the 30 day writing challenge, and this is what it's going to entail:

Looking forward to that as well, starting the 1st! Let's hope I keep up with it!!

Till next time x

New Beginnings

It's been a while, a pretty long one.

Last time I'd posted something, I was excited about finishing a previous chapter in my life and  starting a new one. Unfortunately, one comes to learn that not everything that's expected will necessarily happen. Not because you're a bad person, not because you didn't work hard enough, not because you're any less deserving than everyone else, but because God knows what's best for you. God is kinder to you than you are to yourself. And although the direct apparent reason behind something you dislike happening to you may not be that obvious at first, one must believe that what fate has delivered is truly for the best, in a mystical way that's unknown to us mere simple-minded hyoomans.

That aside, most pertinent updates are as follows:
-I don't think I've ever mentioned Yoko, have I? Yoko is my baby (cat.) I haz cat now.
-Officially done with medical school!! Woot!
-Starting work in hospital as junior physician (shmancy for: glorified secretary) on the 1st of November.
-Finally got my septoplasty done last Tuesday.

More shall follow on each soon enough, but not now.

Also, in an effort to bring this dead blog to life, I decided to take up a 30 day writing challenge. More on that will follow as well, and I'll probably officially start it on the 1st of November.

With sleep slowly seeping into my system, I shall depart in an abrupt manner putting no effort whatsoever into making the transition seamless.

Happy Birthday Chris Martin!!

Once again, it's March the 2nd, which is Chris Martin's birthday! I've written a birthday post back in 2011, and it's scary that four years have passed since then. However, I don't think I can alter much in what I wrote last time, because it was concise and clearly illustrated how I feel. So, bringing that back again, HAPPY 38th BIRTHDAY CHRIS! Wishing you many many more to come. Thank you for all your lovely music, I’ve been a fan since 2000 -I was 9. Seriously, thank you. You’re splendid, and I can’t imagine how the last FIFTEEN years would’ve been without you (and Coldplay, that is!)

Here's a cozy acoustic version of Shiver [a favorite], recorded way back in 2000, when Chris and Johnny were only 23 and 22, respectively:

It's amazing seeing them come so far.

In other news, my cat just burned her paw casually strolling over the stove. Brilliant. Yes I got a cat and her name is Yoko.

Oh, and I have my first final exam of the year this Saturday. It's the beginning of the end guys, countdown to finally graduating uni! These exams will make -or break- me, so lets hope all goes well. One thing I need to majorly improve on is my self confidence, or lack thereof. Consultants keep shoving it in my face that I'm very self conscious and that could potentially lead to me not getting a mark as high as I want it to be on my oral exams (which has alwayyyyyss been the case, but this time the exams are life determining..) and I do understand that body language goes a long way, but I've just never been that overt confident person..

"BUT YOU'RE GOING TO BE A DOCTOR!!!! YOU MUST BE CONFIDENT!!!"

I know. I hope I become a doctor too. But I'm still not, and even if I do manage to become one, it'll still take me ages to be the physician I want to be. I don't think I'll ever reach that level of knowledge and confidence where I just spit out info effortlessly. In regards to the little confidence I have which stems from the inadequate knowledge I have, I try my best periodically to change that, but I ultimately end up at square one. Anyhow, here's an interesting TED talk which gave me my life motto -for this year at least:

"Fake it till you become it."

I guess I'm going to need to do a lot of faking XD But it's a really eye-opening talk if you're like me, the type of person who's generally closed off and not that social, lacking major self-confidence. I'd urge you to watch it if you've got 20 minutes to divert from your work/studying/etc..

Anyhow, I hope that was enjoyable and beneficial :) I need to get back to studying before it's bed time, which is pretty soon..

Till next time xx

India in T - 10 Hours!

Good evening.
It's 1:52 AM and I'm exhausted. I'd intended this to be a post about me leaving to Chennai tomorrow tp work in a hospital there for a week, but thanks to my friend Juman's persistence to get the address to this blog, I spent the last 40 minutes editing the look of it and the title and whatnot. I loved the old one, but I decided it was a bit too old for me.

Anyhow, I'm leaving to India later today. Updates will hopefully ensue soon. Further updates must be in place for my past two weeks doing my clinical elective, that was pretty interesting too.

Before I go, to get a more descriptive feel of what I look like at the moment, watch this. The start of it was me for the past two weeks, but at 0:39 is when it starts to get accurate to this particular moment. Hence, I must bazzounce.

PEACE OUT.

Goodbye 2014

Yes, I've been away.
Yes, I've neglected this blog.

It's been long. Pretty long. It's been over a year since I last posted something here, and although I keep on saying I'll update this more, I fail in doing so. Maybe I'm a liar, maybe I'm a failure, maybe I'm both.

I can make many excuses for my absence:
1) I had a crap phone so I couldn't blog from it. [recently upgraded]

2) 5th year of med school. Senior cycle I. HAH. Death.
3) 6th year of med school. Senior cycle II. HAHA. MORE DEATH.
4) My crappy internet connection at my apartment, courtesy of **********m.
5) Laziness.
6) Procrastination gremlins.

7) My mental status.
8) Mental status.
9) Mental.
10) Status.

With little left on the clock till 2014 ends, I thought I couldn't let a year mark pass without having at least one post on my blog for that year. That's a little too much of a fail, even for me. At least I still have a very minimal level of standards I'm trying to adhere to..

Anyhow, updates:
-I'm supposed to be graduating medical school June 2015. I'm donezo hopefully in six months. However, I haven't been studying as much as I'd like to in the past four months, so crunch time should ensue by the fourth of January by the latest.

-I quit basketball this year :( To focus on studying. Little did I know.............
-I'm going to Chennai, India for a community engagement medical elective sort of thing in about two weeks, hopefully I can post about that if time and internet connection allows.
-My elective in California has been cancelled unfortunately, but I'm hoping that's for the better, and there's a reason I can't fully comprehend at the moment but it'll make sense soon.
- During my hypomanic phase [I called it a hypomanic phase because it just felt like one. I was talking and acting in a hypomanic manner, and I also did NOT need to sleep at all. I went through 96 hours straight with less than 8 hours of sleep. I had to resort to sleeping aids eventually. It was pretty scary!] I don't know how or why it happened, but I managed to do many many things! I became part of my class's Senior Committee, joined 17 clubs in uni, became secretary for a club, joined on organizing a conference, became a writer for the school magazine, AND joined the university community engagement program. Also, I got a guitar and tried to learn a few things pending actual lessons.. In retrospect, my hypomanic phase was actually really nice. I'm now in a trough though, I don't know if it's because it's new year time or everything else but hopefully this can pass. However, that's another days post.

Moving on, as 14 minutes remain on the clock till the 1st of January, I think I'll end this post here. This is pressuring me. Reminds me of that time I submitted a paper 40 seconds before the portal closed. I felt like such a baws.

And with the accurate words of AWOLNATION playing this instant: "blame it on my ADD", I bid you farewell, and wish you a happy new year. Speak to you next year!

Endings

Tomorrow marks my first day in senior cycle 1, my year before last in university. I'm hoping it'll be a good year but being the person I am, I highly doubt it, as I'm not really looking forward to it, but let's hope all goes well. I hope I can share interesting incidents I come across and hopefully write more often.

Here goes nothing!

I have finals in a week

Screw my life.

GAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH.

Sunday, May 6, 2012

It's May Already?

Wow. If I wait just a bit more, it'll be a year record since my last post. A whole year.

A.
WHOLE.
YEAR.
365 days.

I'm useless, I know.
I need to be more active, I know.
I was discussing this with my friend a few weeks ago, seems like in grade school, I did so much more things. I somehow managed to fit school, homework, reading, writing, seeing friends, basketball/gym, and even surfing the net in my day while now in university, I barely (barely) study what I need to on a daily basis. College life sucks I must say. There are some perks, but I'd opt for highschool I guess.

My third year is about to end (on a good note, I hope) with exams in about a week. Sweet summer ensues in 21 days! Hopefully I'll be updating this more then with summer plans and stuff.

Next time I blog, I'll be done with half the journey known as med school.

Till then.

John Galliano, head designer of French House Dior..

[Apologies, this has been ready since last March, I have no clue why I didn't post it right away. Uni has taken its toll on me quite remarkably this semester I guess.. Anyhow, continue reading!]

...Has been suspended from the House of Dior due to "using anti-Semitic insults in a Paris bar".

Now let me get this straight, you're firing the top designer of Dior because of an 'insult' he made? This man has been with Dior since 1996. He racks in 700 million Euros annually. Was that a strong enough reason to suspend him entirely?

Don't get me wrong, I'm not condoning talking about any race or religion in an inappropriate manner.. But come to think of it:

1- He's his own free person, and isn't freedom of speech the number one sought after right anywhere in the world? Whenever someone CAN'T say something the world roars about how deprived that person is and how freedom of speech is a must.

2- Assuming that his slur was regarding any another religion, would the Dior House have reacted in the same manner they did here? I highly doubt so. Like, really highly doubt so. And I say this with proof..

Exhibit A:

The Dutch Cartoon Controversy of 2005.

As many may remember, a Dutch newspaper had put out an announcement for a contest to who could draw the best "Muhammad" cartoon. On 30 September 2005 they said:

"the Jyllands-Posten daily newspaper ("The Jutland Post") published an article entitled "Muhammeds ansigt" ("The face of Muhammad"). The article consisted of 12 cartoons (of which only some depicted Muhammad) and an explanatory text, in which Flemming Rose, Jyllands-Posten's culture editor, commented:

"They [Muslims] demand a special position, insisting on special consideration of their own religious feelings. It is incompatible with contemporary democracy and freedom of speech, where one must be ready to put up with insults, mockery and ridicule. It is certainly not always attractive and nice to look at, and it does not mean that religious feelings should be made fun of at any price, but that is of minor importance in the present context. [...] we are on our way to a slippery slope where no-one can tell how the self-censorship will end. That is why Morgenavisen Jyllands-Posten has invited members of the Danish editorial cartoonists union to draw Muhammad as they see him."

After the cartoons had been published, protests in Muslim countries had sparked. The backlash prompted the newspaper to apologise, but the Danish government defended its right to freedom of expression.

Going back to Mr. Galliano's case, I'll re-quote what I need here: "It is incompatible with contemporary democracy and freedom of speech" Wasn't Galliano expressing his freedom of speech? Why was he condemned for it? Is it not what the world demands? Shouldn't semitism be "ready to put up with insults, mockery and ridicule"? Or is it "insisting on special consideration of their own religious feelings"?

IRONICALLY

Exhibit B:

A group of Muslims had drawn a cartoon themselves. The cartoon shows two men, beneath an 'Auschwitz' sign. The Arab European League published the cartoon on their website. What do you think happened then? Denmark went nuts, fined the Muslim cartoonists 2500 euros (3200$), and quite frankly I don’t know what else. The Dutch court indicated that the cartoons were "unnecessarily hurtful" and pointed out that "the European Court of Human Rights, which considers freedom of speech of paramount importance and defends it thoroughly, makes an exception for the denial or trivialization of the Holocaust"

Why?

Here’s the excerpt I need, excuse the repetition if any:
They [Muslims] demand a special position, insisting on special consideration of their own religious feelings. It is incompatible with contemporary democracy and freedom of speech, where one must be ready to put up with insults, mockery and ridicule.

Um, excuse me? The “Muslims” demand special position and consideration? This is clearly not the case. Its been proved over and over again that any anti-semitic comments aren’t tolerated whatsoever and the people behind them are prosecuted, fined, jailed, and kicked out of their jobs as in Mr. Galliano’s case.

Not to mention the Mel Gibson anti-Semitism case back in ’06, and Charlie Sheen a little while back was told he was "borderline anti-Semitic" too after an interview with Chuck Lorre -his producer. These people are dragged to the ground and stripped of any titles or positions they held. They're ridiculed and stigmatized. All for expressing their simplest right, their freedom of speech.

That's not the part that irks me though, it's how inconsistent the world is in its reaction towards these religious/racial slurs.

I rest my case, I'll leave the rest for you to decide.

Again, I want to make my point clear, I do not condone ANY insensitive, rude, derogatory, or belittling comments towards people from any ethnicity or religious background, and I do not condone what Galliano said, but I deeply condemn the hypocrisy around this issue as the major movers and shakers of the world have proved to me time and time again how biased they are towards who they want.

June 2011 update:

According to the Financial Times, "if found guilty, Galliano could face up to six months in prison and a fine of €22,500 (US$31,187)." A Paris court had ordered he stand trial on charges of "public insults based on the origin, religious affiliation, race or ethnicity" against three people. The trial commenced on 22 June 2011.

^Note they've turned into three people now [A third lady popped up saying she faced the same situation from John last October, before this whole incident began.] They're actually making the man go into trial over a remark he made at a bar. Court trial. And I'd bet my entire savings account that if those insults were made towards a Muslim -especially- or a person of any other religion on that matter, not a leaf would've been turned in their defense. Yet its the Muslims who ask for special consideration, eh?

M A D W O R L D.

I'm sick of it.

Happy Birthday Chris Martin!

Wishing you many many more to come. Thank you for all your lovely music, I’ve been a fan since 2000 -I was 9. Seriously, thank you. You’re splendid, and I can’t imagine how the last 11 years would’ve been without you.
